Timaná: The Heroic Town Where Time Becomes Coffee

Timaná: La Villa Heroica donde el Tiempo se hace Café

In the heart of southern Huila, amidst legends of freedom and lands of mystical fertility, stands Timaná. Discover why this municipality is the sacred origin of our bean's character.

To speak of Timaná is to speak of the Villa de la Gaitana. Founded in 1538, this land became the epicenter of a clash of worlds that forged the spirit of its people. Today, the aroma that wafts through its mountains is not of gunpowder, but of Colombia's most exquisite coffee.

1. The Natural Guardian: The Piedras Blancas Mountain Range

The secret to the freshness and complexity of our coffee originates in the highlands. The Serranía de Piedras Blancas traverses Timaná's territory like a green cloak that protects the region's biodiversity.

  • The Microclimate: This mountain range acts as a natural barrier that regulates winds and humidity. Thanks to it, the coffee plantations receive optimal cloud cover that protects the beans from direct sunlight, allowing for slow maturation and an unparalleled concentration of sugars.
  • Water Resources: From its depths flow the currents that irrigate our lands, ensuring that every coffee plant grows in a pure and balanced environment.

2. A Heritage that Breathes in Every Corner

Timaná is not just coffee; it is a living museum of Huila's history. Walking through its streets, you encounter monuments that tell the faith and resistance of a people:

  • Church of San Calixto: The heart of the municipality. Its imposing architecture in front of the main park, where the legendary Ceiba de la Libertad shades visitors, is the ultimate symbol of the Heroic Villa.
  • Tobo Chapel: A historical treasure that preserves the essence of the colonial era. It is one of the oldest and most representative temples in the region, a place where silence and stone remind us of our deep roots.
  • Naranjal Round Church: A unique architectural gem due to its circular shape. Visiting the Naranjal village is to understand how the community has built its identity in harmony with the surrounding coffee landscapes.

3. The Legacy of La Gaitana: Indomitable Identity

Timaná is the real-life setting where the Cacica Gaitana united peoples to defend the dignity of their territory. To the world, it is a historical fact; for us, it is why our coffee has a strong and authentic character. Every coffee grower in the area is a guardian of a tradition that has almost five centuries of roots.

4. Cup Profile: What Does Timaná Taste Like?

The coffee born in these mountains is globally recognized for its sensory complexity:

  • Tasting Notes: A sweetness reminiscent of panela, a citrus acidity of ripe orange, and a clean, prolonged aftertaste.
  • Human Quality: In Timaná, coffee farming is the backbone of thousands of families who work with artisanal precision, from the foothills of Piedras Blancas to the villages of Tobó and Naranjal.

Did you know...? The name "Timaná" comes from the indigenous Timanaes, expert farmers long before the arrival of the Spanish. This ancestral wisdom about the cycles of the earth lives on today in every processing and drying stage of our bean.
